Comparative Study on Aging and Physical Health

Abstract
The elderly were born and have lived their lives within their sociocultural environment. Likewise, health status is conceptualized and measured under the influence of sociocultural context. Hence, an understanding of aging and health in relation
to
sociocultural contexts is crucial in developing relevant health policies for the aged population at a national level or a regional level. The present study reviewed goals and utility of a comparative study and examined those cultural impacts on
aging
and physical heatlh which was dimensionalized as the medical, the functional and the self-evaluative dimensions. This study further reviewed methodological issues in conducting a comparative study. In securing comparisons of the same phenomena,
equivalence should be established. Four types of equivalence such as functional , conceptual, metric, and structural equivalence were presented. Finally, comparability in sample coverage, the timing of data collection, some issues in iterviewing
procedures for a cross-cultural study were discussed.
